1. On one hand, says author Reece Jones, “The system of states, borders, and resource enclosures is embedded in our culture
and our way of life and permeates many aspects of our existence, to the point that it is difficult to imagine life outside of it”
(p. 163). On the other, as suggested in lectures, much or all of it can be considered a product of social construction linked to
the rise of the modern nation-state system and the evolution of global capitalism. Summarize and critically analyze, focusing
in particular on how people try to move across boundaries and borders, and how this creates a “problem” in the 20th and 21st
centuries. As Jones notes, maybe movement is a natural part of being human, but it gets thwarted by this system. Refugees
seem to be a permanent feature that emerges from these movements in the 21st century, but are there ways of changing this?
What does Jones think? What say you? Does society just rely on the UNHCR to do its job or must there be more that should
be done?
