Discussion Prompt:
This week we will look at the sections of the USA PATRIOT Act which deal with detention and enhanced surveillance procedures. We’ll also consider US actions like waterboarding and kidnapping.
Read through this week’s resources and view the videos provided and consider whether or not you see these actions (waterboarding and kidnapping) as legal or illegal. Has the US pushed the boundaries by using techniques considered illegal or immoral? What about its actions toward immigrants as a result of the fear of terrorists entering the US? Review some of the “featured topics” provided on the website of American Immigration Lawyers and share some thoughts on that question. Focus your response on either the topic of interrogation or the topic of immigration.
